MILWAUKEE (AP) — Democrat Russ Feingold’s U.S. Senate campaign is returning $45,000 in contributions from employees of a Boston law firm accused of giving bonuses to partners who made political donations.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that a Feingold spokesman said Sunday the contributions would be immediately returned.

The announcement came after the Boston Globe reported that the founding partner of Thornton Law Firm, his wife and two top lawyers gave almost $1.6 million to Democratic candidates and groups from 2010 through 2014. Over that period, they received $1.4 million in bonuses, many of which matched the donations.

Feingold says he won’t tolerate anything that would “skirt on the possibility” of being inappropriate.

He’s running against Republican Sen. Ron Johnson, whose campaign says Feingold was happy to take the contributions until he was caught.
