EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) — An Eau Claire man charged with fatally shooting his neighbor told police he was constantly hearing voices in his head.
Forty-four-year-old Shane Helmbrecht was charged Thursday with first-degree intentional homicide.
Thirty-six-year-old Jenny Ward was shot in her home early Saturday, with one of the shots hitting her heart. Police arrived and arrested Helmbrecht as he tried to leave in a pickup. The district attorney says a rifle was found in the truck.
Helmbrecht told police he heard voices in his head “all the time,” and that he fired shots because he thought children were being harmed.
District Attorney Gary King tried to have Helmbrecht’s $1 million cash bail revoked, so he could be held in jail without any bond, but the court commissioner denied his request, according to the Leader-Telegram.
