JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) — A Janesville man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a crash that caused the death of an unborn child.

Jameson Sughroue was eight months pregnant in April 2015 when a car driven by Brandon Russell went out of control and crashed into hers. Her unborn child died after an emergency cesarean section. Russell pleaded guilty in January to homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. He admitted smoking marijuana before the crash.

The Janesville Gazette reports that at Russell’s sentencing Thursday, Sughroue showed pictures of scars on her body and told of the scars to her heart as she pleaded for the maximum sentence of 43 years.

Russell said he was sorry and never would have smoked marijuana if he had known what would happen.
