MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A state John Doe probe into allegations of abuse at Wisconsin’s youth prison has expired under new time limits Republicans imposed last year.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Tuesday that Attorney General Brad Schimel and Lincoln County District Attorney Don Dunphy didn’t seek an extension for the investigation at the Irma facility. A federal probe continues, however.

John Doe investigations are similar to grand jury probes. Republican Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill last year that limits such investigations to six months unless a panel of judges approves an extension. Republicans drew up the bill in response to a long-running John Doe probe that Democratic prosecutors in Milwaukee launched into Walker’s campaign.
