MADISON, Wis. — Gov. Scott Walker has a signed a bill giving libraries more legal options to collect fines for overdue materials.
The bill creates exceptions to privacy laws protecting borrowers’ identities so libraries could report them to collection agencies and police. Walker signed the bill privately Monday.
According to the Wisconsin Library Association, people fail to return $3 million worth of taxpayer-owned library materials each year.
The Assembly and Senate both passed the bill on voice votes in February.
