BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. (AP) — A motorist who struck and killed a tow truck driver on the interstate in Jackson County has been sentenced to probation for negligent homicide.

Nathan Walsh was loading a disabled vehicle on his flatbed truck along Interstate 94 in October 2014 when he was hit by a pickup truck. Steven Dolan was behind the wheel of that pickup and was convicted of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle in November.

Judge Anna Becker sentenced Dolan on Thursday to five years of probation. He was also ordered to spend two weeks in jail every year of the probation around the anniversary of Walsh’s death. Dolan’s attorney had argued Walsh’s death was an accident and didn’t amount to a crime.

WQOW-TV reports Dolan faced a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
