GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Survivors of a former Brown County Jail inmate are suing the county, saying he died after being denied adequate care.

Press-Gazette Media reports the lawsuit says 43-year-old Joshua Dylan Anderson, of Green Bay, regularly ate food containers, his jail uniform and human waste while in custody, resulting in a bowel obstruction that took weeks to pass. The lawsuit filed in January says he died in a nursing home on Christmas 2014 but doesn’t list the cause.

Brown County Sheriff John Gossage says jail staff acted properly.

Anderson’s estate says he was placed in a treatment center in October 2013 because police determined he was a danger to himself. He was later jailed for a probation violation, losing 36 pounds there. He returned to the treatment center in January 2014.
