Court upholds Madison prohibition on guns on buses

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A state appeals court says people can’t carry guns on Madison city buses.

Wisconsin Carry, a gun rights group, had filed a lawsuit last year alleging the Madison Transit and Parking Commission rule prohibiting weapons on buses can’t stand in the face of a state law that bars political subdivisions from enact ordinances or resolutions regulating the ownership and possession of firearms that are more restrictive than state statutes.

The 4th District Court of Appeals upheld the prohibition Thursday. The three-judge panel ruled unanimously that the ban is a rule, not an ordinance or resolution.

Wisconsin Carry’s attorney, John Monroe, questioned how the transit commission can have the power to enact a regulation that the city council can’t.
