MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A truck driver from Montana has been sentenced to 10 months in jail for a crash that killed a student teacher in Dane County.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports 51-year-old Gary Lammert pleaded guilty Tuesday to causing injury by negligent driving. Authorities say Lammert rear-ended a car driven by 22-year-old Katie Binning in front of Wisconsin Heights High School in 2012, killing her.

According to a criminal complaint, witness told police Lammert didn’t slow or move to avoid Binning’s car, which was waiting to turn left.

Lammert’s lawyer asked the judge if he could wait a month to serve his sentence, but the judge ordered Lammert to be taken to jail immediately.

Prosecutors and Lammert’s attorney had agreed to a two-month jail sentence. The judge imposed a longer sentence.
