BROOKFIELD, Wis. (AP) — An attorney for a Wisconsin mother and stepfather accused of locking their 13-year-old daughter in a cold basement with no running water says they will plead not guilty to child neglect.

Patrick and Alicyn Keller were due in Waukesha County Circuit Court Monday for an initial appearance, but it was postponed to April 14 because the defendants could not be present. Defense attorney Chelsea Williamson says the couple plans to plead not guilty to misdemeanor child neglect.

Forty-seven-year-old Patrick Keller and 41-year-old Alicyn Keller are accused of locking the girl in the basement of their Brookfield home after school. According to the criminal complaint, the child has low-level autism and some cognitive disabilities.

The complaint also says the girl arrived at school with dried feces on her on many occasions.
