SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) — An Arizona man has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend’s fiance in Superior last year.

Forty-three-year-old Juan Padilla could be released on extended supervision after 23 years. WDIO-TV reports the sentence was more severe than what both prosecutors and the defense had sought.

Douglas County Judge George Glonek told Padilla on Monday that he hopes the sentence reminds Padilla “on a daily basis of the horrific and senseless crime” he committed.

In August, Padilla pleaded guilty to first-degree intentional homicide in the May 2013 murder of 46-year-old Terry Luukkonen of Duluth, Minn.

Family members of the victim said Padilla should get the longest sentence possible.

Padilla will get credit for the nearly one year and five months he already has served.
