MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Madison police who shot and killed a knife-wielding suspect have been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing.

Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne said Monday that after examining the evidence surrounding the May 2 killing of Londrell Johnson, there was no potential criminal liability for the two officers involved.

According to Ozanne’s report, Johnson broke into his neighbors’ apartment and killed a mother and daughter before police fatally shot him.

Ozanne says responding officers were told a man was inside attacking a family. When officers entered the apartment, Ozanne says Johnson “made a ‘grunt’ or ‘exhale’ sound as he moved towards them with the knife in his hand.”

Both officers opened fire, killing Johnson.

Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said its own internal review of the shooting is ongoing.
