MADISON, Wis. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson says he’ll use campaign money to pay for his legal challenge to a part of the federal health care overhaul law that pays health care costs for congressional members and their staff.

Johnson spokeswoman Melinda Whitemarsh Schnell said the Republican will pay legal fees when bills are submitted. The lawsuit Johnson filed in January has proved divisive even among fellow Republicans and others in Washington.

Schnell responded Tuesday to accusations by a liberal watchdog group that Johnson didn’t file everything required by campaign finance laws.

One Wisconsin Now executive director Scot Ross said Johnson should report details of an agreement with his attorney from the nonprofit Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty. Ross said he plans to file a complaint with the Federal Election Commission.
