Eastern District Bankruptcy Judge Margaret McGarity will take senior status Jan. 31, and the court is taking applications for her replacement.

McGarity, 66, has been on the bench in Milwaukee since October 1987. She said she is electing to take a reduced workload to travel and do volunteer work.

“I have a new granddaughter,” McGarity said. “Even though I love what I do, I’d like some extra time.”

The 7th Circuit’s judicial council is taking applications to replace McGarity. The council will then make recommendations to the Court of Appeals, which will appoint the judge.

A bankruptcy judge’s term runs 14 years and they make $183,172 per year.

Applications and more information are available at www.ca7.uscourts.gov. Those interested must apply by May 15.
