A bill that criminalizes so-called “revenge porn” – or explicit images posted on the Internet out of anger – passed out of the state Senate Tuesday.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Leah Vukmir, R-Wauwatosa, would make it a Class A misdemeanor to post or publish images of a “private representation” nature if the person did not give consent to post an image. If convicted, an offender faces up to nine months in prison.

The bill passed on a voice vote Tuesday.

Vukmir said the bill was meant to combat people who use the Internet “to harass and inflict terrible emotional pain on countless victims.”

The bill will need to be approved by the Assembly and Gov. Scott Walker to become law.
