Only one judge’s race in Milwaukee County will be contested during this spring’s election.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday – the deadline to file to run – Chief Court Commissioner Laura Gramling Perez and Court Commissioner Cedric Cornwall had signed up to run for a circuit judge seat that will be vacated by Judge Michael Goulee.

Assistant District Attorney Janet Protasiewicz, who is running for a seat that opened after Charles Kahn retired last year, will run unopposed.

The election will be held April 1.

Government Accountability Board spokesman Reid Magney said the deadline to challenge a candidate’s eligibility is Friday, though he said he didn’t foresee any issues.

Forty-four judge’s seats are up for election this year, though the vast majority of them include incumbents who are running unopposed.

There are four other contested seats this year.

In Dunn County, District Attorney James Peterson will face attorneys Roger Hillestad and Christina Mayer of Schofield, Higley & Mayer SC in a primary in February to fill a seat vacated by William Stewart Jr. in November. The two candidates with the most votes will square off in April.

In Florence County, attorney Robert Kennedy Jr. will take on incumbent Judge Leon Stenz.

In Jefferson County, Judge David Wambach will face attorney Joann Miller of Mediation and Collaborative Law Center LLC.

In Waupaca County, two candidates will emerge from a February primary to fill the seat of John Hoffman, who retired in November. The candidates are Assistant District Attorney Vicki Clussman, as well as attorneys Brenda Freeman, Edmund Jelinski and Keith Steckbauer.
