MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker has signed a bill that requires registered sex offenders to notify school officials before they venture onto school grounds.

The Republican measure overwhelmingly passed the Assembly in May. The Senate approved the bill on a voice vote in September. Walker signed it Friday.

The proposal requires sex offenders to let schools known when they will be in a school building, recreation area, athletic field or present on other school property. Violators can be found guilty of a misdemeanor.

The bill makes exceptions for people who have students attending the school or are on the grounds to vote or attend other non-school related events.

Backers say the goal is to give schools information about sex offenders’ presence they don’t get now.
