MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The attorney for a St. Paul man convicted of killing his wife is asking a judge to sentence him to 10½ years in prison, instead of 30.

Jeffery Trevino was convicted in October of second-degree unintentional murder in the death of 30-year-old Kira Steger. Her body was found in the Mississippi River in May, more than two months after she went missing.

The Star Tribune reports reports the prosecution filed a memo Wednesday requesting a 30-year sentence, because of “aggravating factors,” including the fact that Steger’s body was missing for two months.

Trevino’s attorney John Conard argues in a memo that the 39-year-old’s military service and previously clean criminal record should grant him a lower-end prison sentence.

Steger was a central Wisconsin native.
