MILWAUKEE (AP) – A Milwaukee-area woman who admitted striking and killing a developmentally disabled man with her SUV last October will spend a year in the House of Correction.
Thirty-one-year-old Josephine Sardina, of Greendale, was charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and could have faced a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison, a fine of $100,000 or both. But she agreed to plead guilty to homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle.
Prosecutors say Sardina was reading a text message around the moment she hit 54-year-old David Budge. She also had marijuana in her system.
Sardina will be on probation for four years after serving her jail term. She also was sentenced Wednesday to 500 hours of community service.
The Journal Sentinel reports Sardina apologized at the hearing.
