The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors approved a $110,000 settlement Thursday for a man beaten by a former sheriff’s sergeant in October 2009.
The settlement will go toward the medical bills and attorney’s fees of Ray Calderon, 38, who was repeatedly punched and hit by former Sgt. Scott Krause while Calderon was handcuffed in the back of a squad car at the county’s Criminal Justice Facility.
Krause, 42, pleaded no contest to battery and misconduct in office in January 2010 and was later sentenced to 18 months in prison. He was fired from the sheriff’s office.
Calderon filed suit in federal court in October 2012, and said the impetus behind the beating was his plea to use the restroom and tapping his foot on the squad car’s window.
The county’s Judiciary, Safety and General Services Committee unanimously approved the settlement at its Sept. 12 meeting. The board unanimously approved the measure Thursday without discussion.
The settlement now goes to County Executive Chris Abele for approval.
