A litigation partner at Foley & Lardner LLP has been appointed as Milwaukee County’s new corporation counsel.

Paul Bargren said he will retire from the Milwaukee-based firm on Friday and will start his new job on Sept. 26.

County Executive Chris Abele’s office announced Bargren’s appointment in an email to the Board of Supervisors on Wednesday. The board is expected to address the appointment at a future meeting.

Bargren, in an interview, said he is “looking forward to working with everyone in the county.”

He replaces Kimberly Walker, whom the board fired in July after some supervisors said she sided with Abele’s office more often than she sided with the board.

Mark Grady, Walker’s deputy corporation counsel, filled in while the top position was vacant.

Bargren joined Foley & Lardner in 1994 after graduating from the University of Wisconsin’s law school. During his time there, he worked in environmental and insurance law, as well as open-records issues. Prior to getting his law degree, Bargren worked as a journalist for newspapers in Wisconsin and Illinois.
