MADISON, Wis. (AP) – A conservative public interest law firm has accused an Appleton Area School District committee of improperly meeting in closed session to determine what books to include in a ninth-grade reading curriculum.

The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty mailed a complaint to the state Justice Department and the Outagamie County district attorney. It alleges the review committee met in closed meetings from October 2011 through April 2012 in violation of Wisconsin’s open meetings law. As a result, the complaint says the public doesn’t know how the committee arrived at its recommendations.

The law firm asks DOJ and the district attorney to investigate.

Messages left at the school district as well as at DOJ and District Attorney Carrie Schneider’s office weren’t immediately returned.
