BESSEMER, Mich. (AP) — A 50-year-old Upper Peninsula man charged in the disappearance and slaying of his 79-year-old wife has been convicted of first-degree murder and other charges.

WLUC-TV reports a Gogebic County jury returned the verdict Wednesday in the case against Kenneth Peters of Bessemer after about 12 hours of deliberations. The trial lasted three weeks, and other charges in the case included second-degree vulnerable adult abuse.

Defense lawyer Rudy Perhalla argued there was critical missing evidence, including no DNA linking Peters to his wife’s disappearance.

Authorities say Ethel Grzena-Peters last was seen alive on Aug. 3. Her body was found Aug. 13 in Gogebic County’s Watersmeet Township, just north of the Wisconsin state line.

Peters faces a mandatory term of life in prison without parole when sentenced.
