Who’s Doing What: Dane County Bar awards grants; von Briesen & Roper moves

AWARDS AND HONORS

The Dane County Bar Association’s Delivery of Legal Services Committee announced the following organizations received grants for projects that extend legal services and information to the Dane County community:

  • ABC for Health for HealthCheck Check Marks, which provides training and information regarding legal issues related to Badger Care/medical assistance.
  • Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, for Transportation and Outreach to C.O.P.S (Class on Personal Safety) project — specifically for outreach to attract teens to the program.
  • Dane County Legal Resource Center, for printing cost of the Dane County Family Resource Booklets. Booklets will be provided free of charge to low-income litigants.
  • Tenant Resource Center, for assistance to produce materials about new legislation focusing on SB107 Wis. Act 108.
  • The University of Wisconsin Law School Pro Bono Program, for software to create an interactive online ethics course for pro bono law student volunteers and the greater pro bono community.
  • Workers Rights Center, for printing basic rights information sheets in English and Spanish and Wisconsin Workplace Rights Manuals to be distributed at trainings.

• Richard Gallagher, of Foley & Lardner LLP, Milwaukee, was named a life member of the American Law Institute in recognition of his 25 years of involvement with the organization. Based in Philadelphia, ALI produces scholarly work to clarify, modernize and otherwise improve the law.

• Mary Braza, of Foley & Lardner LLP, Milwaukee, was selected by The National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School as the recipient of its 2012 Joseph E. O’Neill Award. The award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the sports industry while exemplifying the highest ethical standards.

ON THE RISE

Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan LLP, Milwaukee, announced its new Restaurant & Hospitality practice group.

The group will provide counsel and advice on business formation; real estate transactions; menu structuring; venue, labor, and liquor permits; noncompete clauses; and shareholder and investor agreements. The firm’s attorneys also are available to counsel clients on federal and state regulations involving organic foods and meats and the local food movement.

• Amy Lindner, of the Schroeder Group SC Attorneys at Law, Waukesha, was appointed president and chief executive officer of Meta House, a program that treats women in recovery for drug and alcohol addiction and provides comprehensive services for their children. Lindner succeeds Dr. Francine Feinberg, who led the organization for the past 29 years and will be retiring this fall. The transition becomes effective Aug. 1. Lindner earned her law degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2003.

• Kevin Martin, founder of Martin Law Office SC, Oak Creek, was certified as a civil trial specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He earned his law degree from Marquette University Law School in 2003.

• The Milwaukee Bar Association announced the following results of its 2012 election:

  • Vice president: David Peterson, Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren SC, Milwaukee
  • Directors: Shannon Allen, Friebert, Finerty & St. John SC, Milwaukee; Thomas Reed, State Public Defender Milwaukee Trial Office, Milwaukee; and Andrew Wronski, Foley & Lardner LLP, Milwaukee
  • Judicial selection committee members: Elizabeth Haas, Foley & Lardner LLP, Milwaukee; CJ Murray, Beck, Chaet, Bamberger & Polsky SC, Milwaukee; and Karen Tidwall, Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek SC, Milwaukee
  • ABA delegate: Charles Clevert Jr., U.S. District Court judge for the Eastern District of Wisconsin

• Elisabeth Shea, of Stafford Rosenbaum LLP, Madison, was elected to serve as president-elect of the Dane County Bar Association. Shea will be the sixth attorney from Stafford Rosenbaum to serve as DCBA president. She serves as president-elect from June to May 2013 and will serve as president from June 2013 to May 2014. Shea focuses her practice on general municipal law and business matters.

• Laura Skilton Verhoff, of Stafford Rosenbaum LLP, Madison, was elected to the State Bar of Wisconsin Board of Governors. She will serve for two years beginning July 1. Skilton Verhoff is a partner at Stafford Rosenbaum and her practice includes both litigation and estate planning and probate.

• Nelson Still, of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek SC, Milwaukee, was named the firm’s director of operations and information technology. He has more than 24 years of experience in the software, retail, consulting and market research industries. Still earned his MBA from Northern Illinois University and his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Africa.
