John Daniels Jr., chairman of Quarles & Brady LLP, Milwaukee, received the Friend of the University Award from the Marquette University Alumni Association.

The award recognizes distinguished leadership and/or service to Marquette University by a nonalumnus/alumna. Daniels was selected due to his work as a supporter of Marquette’s Urban Scholars Program, which provides 10 full-tuition awards to academically promising students from disadvantaged backgrounds in Milwaukee-area high schools and Cristo Rey High School in Chicago. Daniels earned his law degree from Harvard University in 1974.

James Peterson, a partner at Foley & Lardner LLP, was selected to receive the 2012 Donald O’Melia Local Service Award from The Wisconsin Law Foundation, the charitable arm of the State Bar of Wisconsin. The award recognizes a lawyer who has made a significant public service contribution in his or her community.

The award will be presented June 14 during the 2012 Member Recognition and Networking Celebration at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells. Peterson is a member of Foley’s private equity and venture capital, transactional and securities, and international practices.

Perkins Coie LLP was named one of the 2012 Top 10 Family Friendly Firms by Yale Law Women, a student organization devoted to promoting the interests of women in law school and the legal profession. This is the fourth time in the past five years that Seattle-based Perkins Coie, which has an office in Madison, has been included on the list.

Judge James Shapiro, of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, received the Judge Myron L. Gordon Lifetime Achievement Award at the Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association’s 10th Annual Meeting and Presentation on April 26.

On the  rise

Nathaniel Cade Jr., of Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan LLP, Milwaukee, was named to the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity’s 2012 Fellows Program. Members include general counsel and managing partners from top law firms and in-house legal departments across the country.
Cade’s practice includes product and professional liability, complex commercial litigation, construction law, insurance defense matters, patent litigation, and legal ethics. He earned his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School.

• Kevin Delorey, a partner at Quarles & Brady LLP’s Madison office, was appointed to serve on the Steering Committee of the Contract Documents Forum of the Associated General Contractors of America.

Delorey’s practice includes all aspects of commercial real estate development, and design and construction contract negotiation and drafting. He received his law degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

Jeff Goldman, of DeWitt Ross & Stevens SC, Madison, was elected to the board of the Madison Estate Council. The council is made up of professionals representing four general disciplines: estate planning attorneys, trust and fiduciaries, CPA’s and accountants, and insurance advisors. Goldman practices in DeWitt’s Trust & Estates and Litigation practice groups. He earned his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

Steve Werner, an attorney and shareholder at Murphy Desmond SC’s Janesville office, was named chairman of the board of directors of Forward Janesville Inc., an economic development organization.

Werner has served on the board for more than six years and is past chairman of Forward Janesville’s Government Relations Council. Werner’s law practice focuses primarily on business clients, with an emphasis on formation and planning, transactional law and commercial real estate.

• The Greater Milwaukee Association of Legal Professionals announced the election of its 2012-‘13 chapter offices: Joni Jakubowski, of The Schroeder Group SC, Attorneys at Law, Waukesha  — president; Mary Burns, of Major League Baseball, Office of the Commissioner — treasurer and executive secretary; Melody Sanders, of Foley & Lardner LLP, Milwaukee — membership director; Bernice Tresemer, of Cramer, Multhauf & Hammes LLP, Waukesha — corresponding secretary; and Maureen Gromacki, of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. — parliamentarian.

On  the  move

Lopez Law Group LLC, a Madison immigration law office, joined the law firm of Murphy Desmond SC, Madison.

Now operating as Lopez Immigration Law at Murphy Desmond, the practice includes attorney Glorily Lopez, associate attorney Raluca Vais-Ottosen, law clerk Maryam Ghayyad and legal assistant Holly Storck-Post.

Lopez, who joined Murphy Desmond as a shareholder, exclusively practices U.S. immigration and nationality law. She earned her law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 2001.

Vais-Ottosen also works in immigration and nationality law. She earned her master of laws degree from Louisiana State University and is licensed in Wisconsin and New York.

Ghayyad is on track to earn her law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in May and become an associate attorney at Murphy Desmond.
