Four Morrison residents on Thursday filed a federal lawsuit against town officials for prohibiting residents from placing signs with political or religious messages on their property, according to a Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty news release.

In 2006, Invenergy began approaching landowners in Morrison and other nearby communities seeking to get contracts permitting the construction of 400-foot-tall wind turbines. The Invenergy Ledge Wind Energy Project, according to the release, is a proposed project that could include 100 wind turbines with a capacity of more than 100 megawatts.

The lawsuit — filed by James and Barbara Vanden Boogart and construction business owner Jon Morehouse and his wife, Lori Morehouse — claims town officials are using a sign ordinance to prevent residents from voicing opposition to the wind turbine development, according to the release.

The lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of the ordinance and, according to the release, residents are seeking punitive damages and attorney fees from town officials.
