WEST BEND, Wis. (AP) — The retired chairman of Wisconsin Energy has been granted supervised release following an attack on his wife of more than 60 years.

Charles McNeer attacked his wife, Ann, with a hammer as she slept in their Washington County home last June. A criminal complaint says McNeer then took an overdose of medications.

McNeer was initially charged with attempted homicide and later entered an insanity plea to reckless injury after negotiations with prosecutors. He was committed to Mendota Mental Health Institute and ruled competent for trial in September. He pleaded insanity to attempted homicide.

The Journal Sentinel reports a Washington County judge sentenced to the 85-year-old McNeer to 20 years supervision, including several restrictions, including a requirement that the couple live in separate residences.
