BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — A federal judge has ordered the town of Beloit to pay almost $307,000 in attorneys’ fees and court costs following a lawsuit that already cost the town $1.5 million.
The lawsuit had been filed by town records clerk Mary Abegglen and her husband, former deputy police chief Willis Abegglen. The two claimed they’d been retaliated against for speaking out against racially insensitive remarks by a former police chief.
A federal jury found in their favor, and in May they were awarded $495,300 in damages plus $1 million in punitive damages.
On Monday, a judge ruled that the township must also pay the related court costs.
A Beloit Daily News report says Town Chairman Rob Pavlik and Town Attorney William Henderson have declined to comment on the most recent ruling.
