APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — Two Wisconsin teenagers have appeared in court on charges they abandoned their newborn baby outside a church in Kimberly.

Eighteen-year-old Benjamin LaMarche and 17-year-old Nadia Zahirudin are both charged in Outagamie County court with child abandonment and child neglect.

WLUK-TV reports during LaMarche’s court appearance Thursday a $10,000 signature bond was set and his preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 1.

Zahirudin also had a $10,000 signature bond set. Her preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 26.

A man walking his dog found the newborn near a Dumpster in back of the Fox Valley Christian Fellowship church on May 9. The child survived.

Had the teens dropped off the baby at a hospital, they would have been protected from charges under Wisconsin’s Safe Haven law.
